About National Testing Agency

The National Testing Agency (NTA) is the autonomous and statutory body responsible for conducting large-scale, transparent, and professional examinations in India. As the recruiting authority for UGC NET, the NTA ensures a standardized and fair selection process for candidates seeking academic positions across the country. Successful candidates will be eligible for appointments in institutions under the University Grants Commission (UGC) and other higher education bodies across All India.

Eligibility Criteria

Educational Qualification

To be eligible for the UGC NET June 2026 examination, candidates must hold a Postgraduate degree (or be in the final year of their PG course). The minimum percentage required varies by category:

  • General / EWS: Minimum 55% aggregate marks in the Postgraduate degree.
  • OBC-NCL / SC / ST / PwD / Third Gender: Minimum 50% aggregate marks in the Postgraduate degree.

Note: Candidates appearing for their final PG examination can also apply, provided they submit proof of passing the exam with the required percentage before the final selection rounds.

Nationality

The applicant must be a citizen of India. Additionally, candidates who are subjects of Nepal and Bhutan, or Tibetan refugees who came to India before 1 January 1962 with the intention of permanently settling, are also eligible to apply.

Application Fee

The NTA has waived the application fee for this cycle. There is no application fee for this recruitment. All eligible candidates can apply free of cost, making this a highly accessible opportunity for all qualified aspirants.

Selection Process

The selection for UGC NET is based entirely on a single stage: an Online CBT Exam. This Computer Based Test (CBT) is conducted in two papers — Paper 1 (General Ability) and Paper 2 (Subject-specific). Candidates must qualify in both papers to be declared successful. The exam tests teaching aptitude, research aptitude, and in-depth knowledge of the chosen subject.

Preparation Tips

Here are practical tips to help you prepare effectively for the UGC NET recruitment:

  • Map your study plan to the selection rounds outlined in the notification: Online CBT Exam. Since there is only one stage, your preparation must be comprehensive for both Paper 1 and Paper 2.
  • Read the full official notification PDF and the syllabus before starting structured preparation — it is the single source of truth on eligibility, syllabus and pattern.
  • Focus heavily on Paper 1 (Teaching Aptitude, Research Aptitude, Reasoning, Comprehension, etc.) as it carries equal weightage to your subject paper and is often the differentiator for top ranks.
  • For Paper 2, revise your core PG subject thoroughly, focusing on NCERT and standard university textbooks, as questions are often direct and concept-based.
  • Bookmark the official application portal and check it daily during the application window for any corrigendum, syllabus update or admit-card release.
  • Practice previous years’ question papers (PYQs) to understand the difficulty level and question pattern, which has become increasingly analytical in recent years.
  • Keep all original certificates and self-attested photocopies organised in a single labelled file ready for the document-verification round.
  • Manage your time effectively during the exam; Paper 1 requires quick calculation and logical reasoning, so practice speed-accuracy balance.

Documents Required

Before starting the online application for the UGC NET post, candidates should keep the following documents ready in scanned format:

  • Recent passport-size photograph and scanned signature in the format specified on the application portal (white background, specific dimensions).
  • Government-issued photo ID — Aadhaar card / PAN card / Voter ID / Passport / Driving Licence.
  • Date-of-birth proof — 10th class certificate or Birth Certificate.
